AFTERMATH PART II

While you are all waiting for book four to come out, I thought that I would give you something to read.

AFTERMATH

A miniseries set in the world of the Senses Novels

Part II

By the time the meds kicked in I had worked myself into a pretty poor state of mind. I reasoned that I had never lifted a hand against that woman in the twenty-some-odd years of our marriage. She had no call to hit me in the back of the head like that, temporary insanity or not. For all she knew, I could have lain in our shelter and died.

I broke a couple of items as I threw them back into the boxes. For a second that didn’t register, then I realized that I had no idea how long my stay down here would be, I couldn’t afford to waste anything! I slowed down and took a few deep breaths. I was still angry, but at least I was back in control.

I managed to find the light switch and was pleased to see that the batteries were fully charged. The solar array had been doing its work. I turned on my Geiger counter and saw that all I had was the usual background radiation. That was good; my shielding was working too.

I knew that I had a lot of other things I should be doing to get ready for a long haul down here, but my curiosity was too much, I had to see what the outside world looked like. My electronics were all EMP proof as the entire shelter was a Faraday cage. No Electromagnetic Pulse could overload any of my systems. That’s why I had opted for a unique camera setup that I could extend outside of the shelter rather than a clumsy periscope.

It took a few minutes to get everything aligned and then I turned the camera on and pushed it out of the top of the shelter. What I saw shocked me.

The world was bright and green. It was as though nothing had happened, no poison rain, no radioactive dust clouds, nothing. Birds were out, and I saw an old barn cat that lived with us stalking something in the grass. What was going on here? Had I died and gone to heaven or an alternate world?

I pushed an extensible probe from the Geiger counter out next to the camera. It showed a little less than the standard background radiation. There was no radioactivity; it was perfectly safe to go outside.

Or so I thought.
