Each novel in the series opens in much the same way. Our heroes are gathered around a campfire somewhere within a hidden hollow in a mountain range in the western United States. It is cold, and it is dark. It is, in fact, the darkest part of the night.
This scene is not by chance. It was carefully constructed to be not only a time and place, but a metaphor. Each member of our intrepid band is telling their life story to the point of where they arrived at this spot and moment. We have all been there or will all be there sometime in our lives.
Each of us will face the darkness of the night, the cold and the fear. For many, it will be a time of agonizing depression. For others, it will be a devastating loss. No matter what the particular circumstance is, we all have to come face-to-face with it. It is how we deal with the night that defines us.
The bad news isn’t over. We don’t just face this once in our lives. We will have to deal with it many times. There is good news. Each time we successfully defeat the darkness and the demons that occupy it, we come away stronger and better prepared for the next time. You come away the hero.
