SENSES NOVELS – ON THE DEATH OF CHARACTERS

NOTE: THIS IS A RECYCLED POST FROM A PREVIOUS BLOG

****SPOILER ALERT**** IF YOU HAVE NOT READ TA'AM: BOOK THREE OF THE SENSES NOVELS, BE WARNED THAT THIS BLOG POST CONTAINS SPOILERS!

In the latest installment of the series, TA'AM, one of the characters dies. I don't know a plainer way to state it, and if you think that's a spoiler, then I apologize. I know that I had at least one fan that wasn't happy about this my killing off this character. I have to tell you to be prepared; this is going to happen. The death of characters is as natural a part of the cycle of writing as it is a part of the cycle of life in the so-called 'real' world.

I have made it no secret from the beginning, characters are going to die. In fact, you can expect that in the final volume (yes, there is to be a 'last book' in the series), main characters, perhaps some that you've come to like or love, are going to perish. Who they will be and how they will die, we will all have to wait and see. Take heart; there are a few more books to go!

I can't promise you that others won't shuffle off their mortal coil in the upcoming books. Some of these may be characters that you have come to care for, but each death serves a purpose for the plot and is not done randomly. That isn't to say that I can't be cruel. There are times when a touch of cruelty is also necessary for the plot.

Look, even authors have their favorite characters. I know that I do. I will tell you this, if the plot calls for my favorite one to die, I will move my fictional heaven and earth to try to keep it from happening. If I simply cannot see a way around it without harming the story, that one will go.

So, to those of you mourning the loss of a character, I offer my condolences. I'm sure that you will get over it. Remember that I believe in a literal heaven and hell (though, I'm sure it is nothing like we imagine it to be.) Maybe fictional characters have their own?
