If you haven’t gotten your copy of SYNESTHESIA: Book Four of The Senses Novels yet, then you may want to skip this post, there be spoilers ahead.
Synesthesia is an odd condition defined as, “the production of a sense impression relating to one sense or part of the body by stimulation of another sense or part of the body.” Science is discovering that there are many types of synesthesia. One of the more common ones is the ‘tasting’ of colors. In book four, the condition refers to ‘mirror-touch synesthesia’ which is a form of 'super-empathy.'
Mirror-touch synesthesia manifests itself as someone seeing another having a physical experience and then feeling that experience for themselves. An example would be, seeing someone get a cut; the person would synesthesia would ‘feel’ the cut as well. And this is where our hero, Eli, comes in.
Eli goes beyond mirror-touch synesthesia in that he doesn’t have to actually ‘see’ the person to experience what they are going through. Eli ‘feels’ what they feel as long as they are nearby. Fortunately or unfortunately, depending on your viewpoint, his ability goes far beyond that. How far? It’s at this point that I am supposed to tell you to go buy the book and find out, but I’ll give you a hint, Eli not only feels what others are going through, his ability also causes other people to experience what HE feels and it is often multiplied many times over.
There is even more to Eli’s abilities, but you will need to read about them for yourself. Suffice it to say that this novel answers many of history’s burning questions, although they may not be the expected answers.
A lot of research was done for this book, so about 90% of the places and events are from documented sources. What happens in those places and how those events came about? Well, that’s the story.
